Defence & Specialist Facilities Airflow Systems
High-Volume Airflow Solutions For Military Facilities
Military and defence facilities often contain some of the largest and most demanding buildings to heat, cool and environmentally control.
Aircraft hangars, vehicle maintenance workshops, logistics centres, weapons and ordnance stores and indoor training facilities combine large internal volumes, high roof spaces and demanding operational requirements.
MegaFan provides engineered airflow solutions designed specifically for these environments.
Designed To Improve
Effective Air Movement In Very Large Spaces
Aircraft and helicopter hangars present a significant environmental-control challenge. Their enormous internal volumes, high roofs and frequently opening hangar doors make conventional heating and cooling difficult and expensive.
MegaFan AirMax HVLS fans move very large volumes of air slowly and efficiently throughout the hangar.
During warmer conditions, increased air movement across personnel creates an effective cooling sensation, improving working conditions for engineers and maintenance teams without attempting to refrigerate the entire volume of the hangar.
Typical Applications
Suitable environments can include maintenance, aerospace, production and operational support areas where large-volume air circulation is required.
Designed Around The Facility
Every installation is designed around the facility, taking account of aircraft clearances, hangar doors, lighting, cranes, radiant heaters, sprinkler systems and other overhead infrastructure.
Better Working Conditions Without Sacrificing Floor Space
Military vehicle maintenance facilities can contain extensive workshop areas accommodating everything from light vehicles to armoured vehicles, heavy transport and specialist equipment.
Technicians may spend long periods working around and beneath vehicles where natural air movement can be limited.
Ceiling-mounted MegaFan AirMax HVLS fans create broad, consistent airflow throughout these working areas while keeping valuable workshop floor space completely clear.
How The System Can Help
High-volume air circulation can support comfort, temperature consistency and general airflow throughout large military maintenance environments.
- Improve thermal comfort for engineers and technicians
- Increase air movement throughout maintenance bays
- Reduce stagnant areas
- Improve temperature consistency
- Reduce heat accumulation within large workshops
- Circulate heated air more effectively
- Complement existing heating and ventilation systems
- Eliminate the need for numerous portable floor fans
Air Circulation Does Not Replace Process Extraction
HVLS air circulation complements rather than replaces dedicated extraction required for vehicle exhaust fumes, welding, painting or other processes.
Maintaining Stable And Uniform Storage Conditions
For weapons, missiles, ammunition, ordnance and sensitive defence equipment, airflow has a different purpose. The priority can be maintaining consistent environmental conditions throughout the storage facility.
Large Buildings Naturally Stratify
Warm air rises towards the roof while cooler air remains below, potentially creating different temperatures at floor level, between storage racks and at high level.
Localised Temperature Zones Can Develop
Localised hot and cold zones can also develop where air movement is poor, creating less consistent conditions across the overall storage volume.
More Consistent Conditions Throughout The Building
Effective air circulation can help support more stable conditions across different levels and areas of the facility.
- Reduce floor-to-ceiling temperature differences
- Minimise localised hot and cold spots
- Maintain more consistent temperatures across storage racks
- Improve conditions between high-level and low-level storage
- Reduce temperature stratification
- Support controlled storage environments
- Improve the effectiveness of existing heating and cooling systems
- Reduce unnecessary HVAC energy consumption
It is to help the building's environmental-control system maintain stable and consistent conditions around the assets being stored.
Multi-Level Environmental Monitoring
Temperature at one point in a large military store does not necessarily represent conditions throughout the building. MegaFan systems can incorporate environmental sensors positioned at strategic locations and different heights throughout the facility.
Monitoring Conditions At Different Heights
Sensors can continuously monitor environmental conditions at several levels throughout the building.
Smart Controller Response
The MegaFan Smart Controller can use sensor information to automatically regulate fan operation, increasing or decreasing air circulation according to actual conditions within the building.
Working Alongside HVAC
This allows the HVLS system to work alongside the primary HVAC system rather than operating independently of it.
Two Systems Working Together
Control The Entire Building, Not Just The Occupied Zone
Military logistics operations frequently use large warehouses and high-bay storage buildings for equipment, components, clothing, spares and operational supplies. These buildings are particularly susceptible to thermal stratification.
Heat Can Accumulate At High Level
Without effective circulation, valuable heat can accumulate beneath the roof while personnel and equipment remain in significantly cooler conditions below.
Large Storage Volumes Need Whole-Building Airflow
High-bay storage, racking, equipment and large internal volumes can create different conditions across the building when air is not circulated effectively.
Benefits Across The Entire Facility
Effective large-volume air circulation can support more consistent working and storage conditions throughout the building.
- Improved temperature uniformity
- Reduced heat stratification
- Better working conditions
- Improved airflow around stored equipment
- Fewer stagnant-air areas
- Improved utilisation of existing heating
- Potential reductions in heating energy consumption
A relatively small number of correctly positioned HVLS fans can influence very large floor areas, helping the building's existing heating and environmental systems work across the full internal volume rather than only around occupied zones.
High Airflow Without High-Speed Draughts
Physical activity generates heat.
Large indoor training environments can therefore become uncomfortable very quickly when occupied by significant numbers of personnel.
MegaFan provides large-volume air movement across the occupied area, creating a cooling effect across personnel without the concentrated blast associated with smaller high-speed industrial fans.
Low-speed operation also helps maintain an environment where verbal communication and instruction remain practical.
Engineering & Maintenance Facilities
Military estates contain a wide range of specialist engineering environments beyond aircraft and vehicle maintenance.
MegaFan airflow systems can be applied within:
The system provides whole-building air circulation while operating alongside any specialist extraction required by individual processes.
Fire, Rescue & Emergency Response Facilities
Large fire and rescue appliance bays present many of the same environmental challenges as vehicle workshops.
HVLS fans can improve general air circulation and personnel comfort within:
Dedicated vehicle exhaust and contaminant extraction systems remain separate from the general air-circulation system.
Temporary & Specialist Defence Buildings
MegaFan systems can also be considered for large temporary or semi-permanent defence structures where the building construction and operational requirements permit.
Applications can include:
Each application is assessed individually to determine suitable fan locations, mounting arrangements, electrical supplies and controls.
Move Air – Not Refrigerated Air
Cooling the entire volume of a large hangar or workshop can require enormous amounts of energy.
HVLS technology approaches the problem differently.
Large-diameter fans generate a broad area of controlled air movement across personnel.
As this moving air passes across the body it increases evaporative cooling, reducing the temperature people perceive without necessarily reducing the actual air temperature by the same amount.
For large military buildings, this provides an extremely practical method of improving working conditions.
Every Military Facility Is Different
An aircraft hangar cannot be approached in the same way as a vehicle workshop.
A vehicle workshop cannot be approached in the same way as a missile store.
MegaFan therefore designs the airflow system around the building, its assets and its operational requirements.
Our assessment can consider:
Fan positions and operating strategies can then be developed around the actual facility.
Complete Project Support
MegaFan can provide a complete solution from initial assessment through to ongoing maintenance:
The result is not simply a collection of fans.
It is an engineered airflow system designed around the military facility and the environment it needs to maintain.
Military & Defence Applications
Specialist Buildings Require A Project-Specific Airflow Strategy
Defence maintenance facilities, secure engineering buildings, nuclear-support facilities, pharmaceutical and clean-production environments, specialist equipment stores, training facilities and technically controlled buildings can all have very different airflow requirements. Ceiling height, equipment, access restrictions, occupied work zones, existing ventilation and environmental controls can all influence the final system design.
MegaFan can support the design of wide-area air circulation, focused directional airflow and automated fan control for suitable specialist buildings. The final solution should always be selected around the actual application and coordinated with the site's existing ventilation, process systems, environmental controls and project-specific requirements.

A large military facility does not necessarily require the same airflow everywhere or at all times.
MegaFan's Smart Controller can provide centralised control of multiple fans and environmental sensors across the building.
Depending upon the installation, the system can provide:
Multiple buildings or operating areas can therefore have airflow strategies appropriate to their individual requirements.
- FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
Aircraft hangars and airport engineering buildings are large, complex airflow environments. Roof height, hangar doors, aircraft positions, maintenance platforms, overhead services, occupied work zones and existing ventilation can all affect the final system design.Â
Â
These FAQs cover the main questions around selecting, positioning and controlling MegaFan systems for aviation facilities.
Which MegaFan Products Are Suitable for Defence and Specialist Buildings?
The right combination depends on the building and the airflow requirement. AirMax can provide wide-area circulation in large, high-roof spaces, while AirWall can support general fresh-air supply or extraction. AirBeam provides focused directional airflow for selected working areas, and AirGo offers a mobile option where airflow needs to move between different locations. Final selection should reflect the building layout, activities and operating conditions.
How Many Fans Will a Defence or Specialist Facility Need?
Fan numbers depend on more than floor area. Roof height, partitions, storage racks, machinery, heat sources and occupied work zones all affect airflow distribution. A large open equipment store may need a different arrangement from a workshop divided into separate bays. The layout should be assessed to establish suitable fan sizes, positions and operating speeds.
Can Fans Be Installed Around Equipment and Building Services?
Potentially, subject to a site assessment. Fan positions must account for structural suitability, overhead cranes, lighting, fire protection systems, cable routes, maintenance access and equipment movement. Required clearances and any site-specific restrictions should be established before installation. The aim is to support airflow while maintaining safe access and normal building operations.
Can MegaFan Systems Support Both Summer Comfort and Winter Heating?
Yes. During warmer conditions, increased air movement can help people feel cooler in occupied areas. During heating periods, suitably controlled low-speed circulation can redistribute warm air that collects beneath high roofs towards working height.
Fans do not actively refrigerate the air or generate heat. Their role is to improve circulation and temperature distribution, with the benefits depending on the building and its existing heating and ventilation systems.
Can Airflow Be Targeted at Individual Work Areas?
Yes. Different areas within the same facility may require different airflow arrangements. Maintenance benches, inspection stations, loading areas and other occupied zones may benefit from targeted air movement alongside wider building circulation.
Â
AirBeam can provide directional airflow towards selected areas, while AirGo can be repositioned as working arrangements change. Positioning should consider nearby activities, loose materials and any processes that could be affected by air movement.
Do Circulation Fans Replace Ventilation or Specialist Extraction?
No. Circulation fans primarily move air already inside the building. They do not, by themselves, provide fresh air or remove contaminants.
Â
Where outside air supply or general extraction is required, AirWall may form part of the ventilation arrangement. Processes involving fumes, dust or hazardous substances require a separate assessment and suitable extraction or ventilation. Equipment for controlled or hazardous environments must meet the specific requirements of that application.
Can Fan Operation Be Automated or Integrated With Building Controls?
Compatible MegaFan systems can be configured to operate around agreed temperature settings and building schedules. This can help match airflow to occupancy, working hours and seasonal requirements.
Where integration with a building management system is required, device compatibility, communications, control responsibilities and any shutdown interfaces should be confirmed during design. Site security and network restrictions must also be considered before specifying connected controls.
