01The challenge

Sports halls are tall, open buildings used by players and spectators, often with high humidity. Warm air rises to the roof in winter, and the hall can become stuffy in summer. The council wanted more comfortable conditions in the pavilion.

02The solution

Four large HVLS fans were hung over the court, with four high-level wall fans to exchange the air. The HVLS fans mix the air in the hall, and the wall fans bring fresh air in and take stale air out.

How the fans change the hall

Cross-section through the building. Each strand is a parcel of air, coloured by temperature in winter and by speed in summer. Step through the scenes to see what the fans change.

Schematic view. Colours are illustrative: in winter, blue is cooler and orange is warmer; in summer, brighter strands are moving faster.

Winter: heat back down to the court

The HVLS fans turn slowly and bring the warm air from under the roof back down to the court and the seating, so less heating is needed. Savings of up to 45% have been achieved in winter.

Summer: air movement and air exchange

The HVLS fans run faster to create a breeze over the court, while the wall fans bring fresh air in at high level and extract stale air. Savings of up to 25% have been achieved in summer.

03The results

The council reports energy savings in both seasons.

04Why it works

  • Tall space: the higher the building, the more heat collects under the roof, and the greater the savings.
  • Two systems together: HVLS fans mix the air, wall fans exchange it.
  • Comfort: better conditions for players and spectators alike.
  • Suited to humid spaces: a good fit for busy sports halls.
